The name Clewer is derived from the Old English word “Clifwara,” which means “cliff-dwellers,” referring to the people who lived below the hill on which Windsor Castle was built. Clewer is an ecclesiastical parish that pre-dates New Windsor and still exists as a separate entity. It is believed that a Saxon settlement was established in the area, possibly at a point where the River Thames could be forded. A wood-and-thatch Saxon church is believed to have been situated on the site of the present-day church. The font that remains today is believed to be Saxon and is thought to have belonged to the earlier church. Until the 1850s, this font was oddly positioned at the west end of the north aisle, indicating that it had likely never been moved from its original location in the Saxon church.
