Stoke Poges is a village and civil parish in South Buckinghamshire. The village is located 3 miles north of Slough and 3 miles southeast of Beaconsfield. The name “Stoke Poges” is believed to have originated from the Old English words “stoc” and “pocg” meaning “stockade at the hill” or “the hill where the stockade was”. Stoke Poges is perhaps best known for its association with the poet Thomas Gray, who wrote his famous “Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard” in the churchyard of St. Giles’ Church, located in the village. The church itself dates back to the 12th century, and has undergone several renovations and restorations over the years. In addition to its literary connections, Stoke Poges is also home to the Stoke Park, a large estate which includes a golf course, spa, and luxury hotel. The estate was originally built in the 18th century and has been the filming location for several movies and television shows, including the James Bond film “Goldfinger“.
