The name Stoke Poges comes from the Old English word “stoc” meaning “stockaded place” and was recorded as Stoche in the Domesday Book of 1086. The village was later named after Robert Pogeys, Knight of the Shire, who married Amicia of Stoke, the heiress to the manor. Robert was the son of Imbert Pugeys, a
Savoyard who was a valet to King Henry III and later the steward of the royal household. The name Pogeys was an English attempt at Pugeys, which ironically meant “worthless thing”. The spelling “Stoke Pocheys” appearing in some records may suggest a slightly different pronunciation of the second part of the name compared to the word “Stoke”.
