Farnham Royal village derives its name from the Anglo Saxon term meaning “homestead where ferns grow.” The village was recorded as Ferneham in the Domesday Book of 1086. In the late 11th century, the affix “Royal” was added to the name by the king. This was a result of the king giving the lord of the manor, Bertram de Verdun, the Grand Serjeanty. The condition for this was to provide a glove and place it on the king’s right hand during the coronation ceremony, while supporting his right arm as the Royal sceptre was held. The title Baron Godolphin of Farnham Royal in the County of Buckingham was conferred on Francis Osborne in 1832.
