Chalvey is a suburb of Slough in the unitary authority of Slough in Berkshire. It was originally a village in Buckinghamshire and was transferred to Berkshire in 1974. The name Chalvey was first recorded in 1217 and is derived from an Old English word meaning “Calf Island” due to its low-lying position on the plain of the River Thames, which may have formed an island in the past.
Chalvey has never had its own parish and is instead twinned with Upton, forming part of the Upton-cum-Chalvey parish. The suburb developed as a working-class community of small terraced houses as Slough grew. Nonconformist churches were established, with the Congregationalists being the first to establish a presence in 1806.
