Burnham was a significant village due to its location on the Great West Road from London to Bath. The 
parish of Burnham was extensive, and a Royal charter was granted in 1271 to hold a market and an annual fair. However, when the first Maidenhead Bridge crossing the Thames opened around 1280, the road was rerouted to the south of Burnham along the modern A4 route, causing Burnham’s relative decline. Consequently, the market was transferred to Maidenhead.
