Old Windsor was once the site of an important palace of the Saxon Kings, and archaeological evidence suggests that royal connections had existed in the area since at least the 9th century. The settlement was documented as a defended royal manor in Edward the Confessor’s time, and it was an important location for the monarchs because of its convenient location near the River Thames for transport and Windsor Forest for hunting.

Old Windsor was also an early minster location and market, probably associated with a lock, and an important riverside mill complex. These factors contributed to the town’s growth and importance in the region, and it remained an important centre of commerce and industry for centuries.

In 1066, Edward the Confessor gave the manor to the Abbot of Westminster, but it was soon taken back into royal possession by William the Conqueror. This suggests that the town was of strategic importance to the monarchs and that they were keen to maintain control over it.

Overall, Old Windsor’s history is closely tied to the monarchy and its importance as a centre of commerce and industry in the region. The town has undergone significant changes over time, but its location and royal connections have helped it to remain an important and historic location in the present day.
